In this initial indoor photoshoot we set out to evoke an emotion of romance. We utilize standard red hues coupled with gold. Although gold is a very similar color to the skintone of the model, it enhances highlights and reflects off the jewelry for a more heated and reflective look. The image essence was that of bronze statue. Our fog machine was turned on intermittently to add texture. Due to our model being a dancer, we focused more on gestures and emotion through movement.
In this styling of photography you must be cognizant of light direction and spillage. You want to keep focus on the subject without being overwhelming with the amount of light you use. My desire was not to showcase the full body by using shadows in a vignette manor. I own two large v-flats which I use to isolate the subject while flagging the lgiht and only using a beauty dish combined with leds to focus the color and exposure hitting her.
We used both strobe and constant led lighting for our red lifestyle photography, but the trick is positioning and powering the strobe in such a way that it does not overpower your constant lighting. Images from these sets are heavily based on posing. The specificity of the model’s head, hands, and torso were crucial in pulling off theses shots. Although light is important, balancing the lighting, color, and the proper amount of shadow is vital. This becomes even more important when the model is in constant motion.
