Location
With the waterfront surprise we find a few things. When thinking of locations that matter to those getting engaged, it all comes down to sentimental value. In this session I was hired to capture a proposal just on the border of the river. On the New Jersey side overlooking Manhattan. Garrett didn’t want to give anything away so he set things up as unexpected as possible. The goal was to have dinner prior to the proposal and walk to the area near the water. This would give enough time to throw off suspicion.
The Timing
Although we had a pretty straightforward plan, there were a few deviations. The weather showed that it would soon storm. On top of that, there was a bit of a delay at the restaurant which caused a shift in schedule. Anyone who is aware of engagements, they have to go off regardless of any hitches. I patiently waited and pretended to be a random photographer at the river railing. This preplan would let Garrett venture towards me without having to call me if he sees my equipment.
The Waterfront Surprise
In true timing, Garrett let me know when he was on his way. I took that time to tell him of my precise location and how to find me. As he approached, I had my assistant tell me as we were mock shooting. This let me navigate her away as well as wait for him to take her place. Everything went really quick and as soon as it happened, the camera captured the moments you see here. Despite the slight rain that began, we were able to capture some beautiful nighttime proposal shots. The best thing about these shots are the small nyc city lights in the background.
