One of the most amazing experiences I’ve had this year was at the amazing MeccaCon. MeccaCon is an amazingly melanin based event founded and run by Maia “Crown” Williams of Crown Royalties and her amazing group of organizers. If you have never been, then you don’t know what you’re missing.

I would have to say that I’m still riding a high from the event. There were tons of people who made sure to make the trip out to beautiful Detroit to enjoy the wonderful artwork, indie comics, and other content that was available while there. The entire day was full of appreciation for beautifully created art from tons of black artists. The purpose was to celebrate black talent and provide young and seasoned people alike with examples of the various talent that looks just like them. Usually an industry filled with under/misrepresentation doesn’t allow for the faces of people of color to be at the forefront of publications and shows, so events and cons like MeccaCon allow for a new type of atmosphere which celebrates our talents.

Although it was a 14 hour bus ride for me, I enjoyed EVERY MINUTE of it and I’m looking forward to participating again in 2016. If you are interested in getting your own table and or simply partaking in the event, you should hurry up and do it now while there are some still available here!
